Don’t Go Dark for the Holidays: Staying Top of Mind Through Year-End
Somewhere around Thanksgiving, a lot of loan officers quietly hit pause. Pipelines slow down, buyers get distracted, and it feels like nobody wants to hear about mortgages until January. So the marketing stops, the check-ins stop, and for six weeks, past clients and agents hear nothing at all.
That silence is an opportunity — for whoever doesn’t go silent.
Why the holidays matter more than they look
The holidays are when people are already in a reflective, relationship-minded mood. They’re reconnecting with family, thinking about the year behind them, and making plans for the one ahead — including, for a lot of them, a move, a refinance, or the house they’ve been putting off. January is when those plans turn into calls. The loan officer who gets the call is usually the one who was in their head in December.
Agents work the same way. December is when many of them plan their next year and decide who they want to send business to. Being the lender who showed up with something thoughtful when everyone else disappeared is the kind of thing they remember.
Show up without selling
The holiday touch isn’t a pitch. The fastest way to waste it is to send a rate update wrapped in a snowflake border. What works is simple, human, and has nothing to ask for:
- A genuine thank-you. To past clients for trusting you with their biggest purchase, and to agents for the partnership. Short, specific, signed by you.
- A home anniversary note. If someone closed with you in November or December, their anniversary lands right in the season — easy, personal, and almost nobody does it.
- Something useful. A quick year-end note on what their home may be worth now, or a reminder to keep their mortgage interest statement for tax time. Helpful beats clever.
- A small, real gift for your best partners. Not everyone — just the agents and clients who actually sent you business this year.
Make it feel personal at scale
The challenge, of course, is doing this for hundreds of people during the busiest personal stretch of your year. That’s where most good intentions die — you mean to send the cards, and then it’s December 22nd.
The answer is to build it once and let it run. Segment your database so past clients, active agents and top referral partners each get the right touch. Schedule the emails and texts now, while it’s still October. Set your anniversary messages to fire on their own. Then spend your actual energy on the handful of people who deserve a personal call.
For the physical touches, RAD works with partners built for exactly this — Handwrytten for real handwritten notes, Box+Bestow for client and partner gifting, and PostcardMania for mail. A handwritten card in a stack of holiday junk mail gets read. A personalized video message through Dubb gets watched. Those are the touches people remember in January.
Don’t forget your pipeline
The holiday slowdown is also the right time for one unglamorous job: clean up your database. Merge the duplicates, update the stages, tag the people who told you “maybe next year.” Next year is about to arrive, and you’ll want those people sorted and ready the first week of January instead of the third.
The bottom line
Going quiet for the holidays feels natural, and that’s exactly why it’s a mistake. When everyone else disappears, a thoughtful, unpushy touch stands out more than it would any other time of the year. Set it up now, let it run, and start January already at the front of people’s minds.
